Medical Council of New Zealand, Wellington

The Medical Council of New Zealand protects the health and safety of the public through the regulation of the medical profession.  The CEO reported to a Council of ten appointed members, led a staff of 40 and operated a budget of $6.5 million.

As CEO I gained skills in implementing best practice in regulation, working actively with the medical profession, the government and related stakeholders, to improve the credibility, operation and understanding of the role and function of the Council. I was on the management committee of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities.

NZ Family Planning Association Inc (FPA)
FPA International Development, Wellington (FPAID)

The Family Planning Association of New Zealand (FPA) works within the health sector to promote a positive view of sexuality and to enable people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.  The Executive Director was responsible for the delivery of 180,000 clinical services and over 70,000 education and professional training sessions per annum, working with over 250 staff.

As Executive Director I successfully advocated for FPA with government policy makers and funders resulting in a major review of the sexual and reproductive health strategy.  I gained skills in financial management and successfully initiated a strategy for the Family Planning Association to ‘trade out’ of an inherited $500,000 deficit within four years. I also gained experience in contracting and quality accreditation.

I helped establish Family Planning Association International Development which delivered reproductive health and sustainable development projects in South East Asia and the Pacific, with funding from international agencies and major Foundations in the USA.
